Floodgates open

The operator of eastern China's largest reservoir, Xin'anjiang Reservoir, opened three of its nine floodgates on Tuesday to avoid the risk of overflowing. It was the first time the Xin'anjiang Reservoir had been forced to discharge water since 1999, the flood control headquarters of Zhejiang Province said.

Authorities have cordoned off the area to prevent tourists from being swept away.

At least 10 cities in Zhejiang have been flooded since Saturday, affecting more than 4.41 million people.

During the flood of 1999, eight of the nine floodgates at the Xin'anjiang Reservoir Dam were opened, nearly inundating the city of Jiande downstream.

By 8am Tuesday, 304,000 people in Zhejiang had been evacuated. Floods also paralyzed 899 roads and 11 railways in the province.

The provincial civil affairs bureau said the national and local governments had allocated 64 million yuan (US$9.9 million) of relief funds for post-flood reconstruction efforts.

Highway to reopen

A collapsed section of the Hangzhou-Qiandao Lake Highway is expected to reopen to traffic in about 45 days, the highway authority said on Wednesday.

A flood-triggered cave-in, measuring 80 meters long and 8 meters wide, happened last Wednesday about 3 kilometers from the Danzu Exit.

It was closed to traffic immediately and caused no casualties.

Torrential rains have damaged 667 roads in the Hangzhou area so far this month, causing damage valued at 73.43 million yuan (US$11.3 million).

Drivers are advised to call 96266 before heading to Ling'an and Chun'an, west of Hangzhou.

Multimedia dance

Cross-media French modern dance "Cin茅matique" is to be staged in Hangzhou this weekend.

The performance interpreted by Adrien M. Company mixes dance, video, numerical art, modern circus, jugglery, music and lights, and will transport the audience to a magical world.

Multidisciplinary artist and leader of the company Adrien Mondot who excels at creating poetic optical illusions via virtual and real dance coupled with modern circus, directs and performs.

Six performances are scheduled in the country. They are at Chongqing, Guangzhou in Guangdong Province, Beijing, Hong Kong and Hangzhou, with Hangzhou having two shows.

Meanwhile, a concert given by Zhejiang Symphony Orchestra will take place tomorrow evening at Zhejiang Concert Hall, as a warm-up for their European tour in September and October.

The troupe will tour Italy, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden and Belgium, giving eight shows.

Foreign visitors

More foreign travelers are choosing Hangzhou as a destination for their China trip according to Hangzhou Tourism Commission on Monday.

Statistics from January to May show some 1.1 million inbound travelers have stayed overnight in Hangzhou. These travelers have brought Hangzhou foreign exchange revenue of US$710.15 million, 16.8 percent higher than that of last year. The average length of staying in Hangzhou per foreign traveler is 3.06 days, 0.08 days more than that of last year.

The number of Oceania travelers increased most rapidly by 30.7 percent, followed by Americans by 17.9 percent and Europeans by 15.3 percent.

Martial arts event

The 7th National Traditional Martial Arts Invitational finished on Wednesday at Zhejiang University of Technology Stadium. More than 1,000 contestants from 66 teams from Shanghai, Beijing, Tianjin and other cities across China competed at the invitational.

Traditional Chinese martial arts such as tai chi and Mulan Boxing are designated as the major competing categories of the invitational.

Architecture honor

Wang Shu, dean of the Department of Architecture of the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, has won this year's gold award from the French Institute of Architecture. He was the first Chinese person to win the prestigious award in architecture since it was introduced in 1965. Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei won the award in 1981.

Art opening

An exhibition "Serve for People's Art - Art Plus Hangzhou" opened at Zhejiang Art Museum yesterday to mark the parallel opening of Artron Hangzhou Art Center.

Artron Group is a company offering a platform to integrate artists' resources, and its website provides comprehensive services to artists, art institutions, collectors and art enthusiasts.

The exhibition features duplicates of Chinese masters' paintings and exquisitely designed books manufactured by Artron, and displays Artron's database on iPads and computers, which boasts information about thousands of artists, including photos, videos, artworks and comments. The exhibition at 138 Nanshan Road ends Sunday.
