SHORT-sightedness has become a serious health problem for students at primary and high schools in Hangzhou, according to health statistics released this week.
More than 50 percent of all primary school students in the downtown area are short-sighted, with 82 percent of students at one school suffering from the problem.
Meanwhile, more than 80 percent of high school graduates are short-sighted, the statistics revealed.
The heavy burden of homework, frequent use of electronic gadgets and poor lighting while studying are cited as the main reasons for prevalence of short-sightedness in local schools.
According to Ministry of Education regulations, homework for primary school students should not take more than one hour, while children in grades one and two should have no writing assignments.
This is to ensure at least 10 hours' sleep for primary students and eight hours for middle school pupils.
However, in reality many students do homework deep into the night.
The regulation also states that students should take at least one hour of physical exercise per day. Schools in Hangzhou excelled in this category; its students were the healthiest among all cities in Zhejiang Province.
