Foreign investment

EIGHTY-TWO of the world Top 500 enterprises have set up altogether 130 projects in Hangzhou during the 11th Five-year period (2006-10), and Hangzhou's contracted foreign investment and capital in place last year both ranked first in Zhejiang Province.

In 2010, Hangzhou attracted 13 projects from world Top 500 companies, and 147 projects with each investment of more than US$30 million.

In the following years, Hangzhou government aims to attract at least 10 projects from world Top 500 businesses annually, and the annual increase rate of foreign capital in use is expected to reach 8 percent.

Emergency lessons

Hangzhou plans to set up one emergency education center and 10 emergency experience classrooms this year, with a total investment of 2.5 million yuan (US$380,283), according to Hangzhou Women's Federation.

The center will be located in the Youth Activity Center in Xiacheng District, and children can learn and practice how to respond to disasters and accidents.

Two experience classrooms have already been established - one at Wahaha Primary School in Shangcheng District and the other at Jiangnan Experimental School in Binjiang District. The remaining eight are still under construction.

Paralympic games

The Eighth National Paralympic Games will be held in the city from October 11, with some events being held in early June. More than 16,000 athletes and organizing staff will attend the games, and Hangzhou will send 83 athletes to take part in the competition.

Hangzhou has collected a total of 36.55 million yuan to hold the event, including 15 million yuan from fiscal revenue and 21.55 million yuan from social donations.

Carver donates

Pan Yuchen, a master of Qingtian stone carving, has donated hand-drawn designs of his work to the China National Arts and Crafts Museum.

Pan has engaged in stone carving for more than 50 years, and received many national prizes and awards.

The China National Arts and Crafts Museum, which is currently under construction and will open in October, is collecting arts and crafts pieces from the public.

It is the second-phase of the museum project, following the opening of the China Knife, Scissors and Sword Museum, the China Fans Museum and the China Umbrella Museum.

Taxi monitoring

Four hundred new taxis in Hangzhou will be installed with a 24-hour monitoring system before this June to guarantee the security of drivers and prevent conflicts, according to Hangzhou Transportation Bureau.

The bureau also said that there would be warnings printed on cars to remind passengers that the car is monitored. The recordings will only be accessed by authorized personnel.

BBC promotion

A TV commercial to promote tourism in Hangzhou - "The World of Smiles, The City of Happiness" - was shown on the BBC News channel in 16 different time slots since 6am on Monday until 2am on Tuesday.

The image promotion commercial, which lasted for nearly 1 minute, was shot and produced by the BBC in Hangzhou last December. In the following six months, it will be aired 416 more times.
