Foreign organ donor

THE Hangzhou government presented the Qianjiang Friendship Award posthumously to British national Mark Terence Osborne for donating his organs to six Chinese patients in the city.

Osborne became the second expatriate in Zhejiang Province to donate organs. The award is the highest honor for foreigners living in Hangzhou.

The 49-year-old was declared brain dead on June 29 at a local hospital and was sent to an operating room to remove his corneas, kidneys, liver and heart for transplant. His wife, surnamed Wang, said it was her husband’s will to donate his organs and his relatives in the UK approved it.

Osborne came to Hangzhou six years ago and worked as an English language teacher. He married Wang and enjoyed his life in the city.

Wang said Osborne loved Chinese paper-cutting and the music fountain at the West Lake. He liked to take a walk in Hefang Street and once took home three injured birds he found on the bank of the Qiantang River and raised them as pets. When he saw students doing homework in a restaurant, he helped them with their English.

Their tranquil life came to an end on March 3 this year when Osborne had a stroke and fell into a deep coma.
