Formula 1 fans flock to compete on mini circuit

NO other sport has the high speeds, high costs and high technology that Formula One displays, and as the F1 whirlwind hit Hangzhou last weekend, local fans scrambled for the chance to be selected for a ride around Shanghai's F1 circuit.

Over the weekend, applicants competed in Carrera Slot Car Racing, which featured remote-controlled model cars as well as scale models of the Shanghai Circuit, to win the chance for a ride around Shanghai International Circuit in an F1 safety car. Two winners were selected and on April 2 they will join 16 other fans from Shanghai and Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province to drive around the circuit.

Although Hangzhou hasn't had a chance to hold an actual F1 race, there are lots of local fans who came to experience the mini F1 track. Some of them told Shanghai Daily why they are so crazy about the motorsport.

It is so excited to win the competition. Previously, I have driven on a 'simulated circuit' by computer and PSP, but soon I will finally have a ride around the real circuit. And it totally deserves to be flaunted to my pals who are also F1 fans.

My love of F1 began in 2009 and my idol is definitely Michael Schumacher, the greatest driver the sport has ever seen. I guess the love derives from F1's super fast speed. Man loves two things, power and speed, and F1 represents the speed."

Gong Cheng,

26, postgraduate (First winner)

"F1 excites me as I enjoy the feeling of overtaking others a lot. I went to the Grand Prix in Singapore in 2010, which is unforgettable and impressive - though the race lasts less than a few hours, no one knows what will happen next."

Tang Ning,

I am a huge fan of F1. The story began several years ago, when I was watching TV at home and suddenly a handsome face caught my eye - it was Kimi-Matias Raikkonen. I thought 'wow, he looks good when he smiles,' and I started concentrating on F1, and I couldn't stop.

I know there are lots of fans in the country and I want to reach them to have more discussion. So I organized the F1 Driver Backup Group online last July, which is now a popular group on several websites, and currently we have over 60 members.

This year, I am going to Shanghai, hopefully I can meet Nico Rosberg and get his signature."

Huang Zhenqin,

19, college student

When I was about to take the national college entrance examination last summer, I watched race videos to relax myself.

The sport is a distinctive sport in that race lovers can only watch the sport rather than take part in it. However, I love it because I can experience the drivers' happiness, passion and other emotions when I watch it.

Though my pocket money is very little, I save to buy the monthly magazine F1 Express because I don't want to miss any F1 news."

Ding Jingqi,

19, college student

I have been loving F1 since 2006 and my favorite driver is Kimi-Matias Raikkonen. The sport, distinctive from other kinds, demands accurate technology and skills. I seldom miss races televised live, no matter how late it is. I regret that I can not come to Shanghai for the event this year since I have to be in school but I won't miss next year."

Yu Shuhong,

21, college student

I love F1 because it is a race for the brave. It's exciting and geilivable (cool, awesome).

Sometimes I am so crazy about F1 that during the race I always hold on to the TV remote controller in case my wife tries to change the channel.

I watched the F1 Grand Prix at Shanghai in 2008 and 2009, I missed 2010 because of business, but I won't miss the 2011 race!"
