Free car plates

HANGZHOU became the second Chinese city after Shanghai to place imported cars on a list of new energy vehicles that will make owners eligible for a free license plate.

Tesla is the first imported electric car to make the list, a privilege previously reserved only for Hangzhou-made models.

The new policy can save Tesla owner’s more than 15,000 yuan (US$2,500) — the price of a plate sold through the city’s monthly auction.

Tesla owners can recharge their cars at a supercharging station in the city’s Sports Park. Eleven more charging stations are under construction in Hangzhou.

Last year Hangzhou registered 2,900 green vehicles, including 500 electric taxies, 100 new energy buses, and 100 electric cars for rental.
