Fruit prices higher

Fruit prices have risen nearly 30 percent in Hangzhou in the past month, compared with a year ago, and the price of strawberries doubled. The price hike is blamed on high temperatures and typhoons last summer, the Hangzhou Price Bureau said.

Sales of strawberry dropped by 10 percent from the same period of last year while apples, Mandarin oranges, fresh jujubes, sugarcane and watermelon all cost more than a year before, according to the Hangzhou Fruit Wholesale Market.

One exception to the trend is the price of cherries, which has declined from 216 yuan a kilo in December to 120 yuan now.

Market officials expect fruit prices to rise further with the start of the seven-day Spring Festival holiday on January 31.
