Full schedule of events for Christmas

THERE are a number of plays and concerts taking place in Hangzhou during the Christmas season.

Today and tomorrow, Stan Lai's drama "Just Play It" will be staged at Hangzhou Grand Theater.

The play tells the story of American pianist John Vaughan who becomes friends with a blind student, Xu Zhecheng, from Taiwan. Xu is a talented piano player and his performance captivates Vaughan. They talk through music including blues and classical to pop and old Taiwan songs.

The play combines drama and music nicely.

Meanwhile, Wenzel Fuchs, Berlin Philharmonic's principal clarinet will perform tonight in cooperation with the Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra.

Fuchs was born in Innsbruck, Austria, and became clarinet soloist of the Vienna Volksoper at the age of 19.

Fuchs teaches in the Berlin Philharmoic's Orchestra Academy and has also been a guest professor at Sakuyou Music University in Okayama, Japan.

In addition, he holds an honorary professorship at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and gives master classes all over the world.

Fuchs and the local orchestra are going to perform A. L. Weber - "Oberon" Overture and the composer's Clarinet Concerto No. 2 in E-flat Major, Op.74.

Yang Yang, the artistic director and chief conductor of the Hangzhou Philharmonic Orchestra, will take the baton. The orchestra was established in 2009 and now has 80 musicians. It will perform a concert on both Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, which is becoming a tradition in the city.

The Wiener Johann Strauss Orchester will come to town and perform its New Year Concert on December 29 before going on to Shanghai Concert Hall for a show on December 31.

Besides all these events, Christmas trees and promotion slogans can be seen everywhere in the city, reminding people it's shopping season.

In front of Hangzhou Tower is a 20-meter Christmas tree. It cost more than 1 million yuan (US$157,360) and has attracted a lot of attention.
