GDP gains

ZHEJIANG Province reported that its gross domestic product in the first quarter of this year rose 10.4 percent compared with the same period last year, the provincial statistics bureau said on Tuesday.

The first-quarter GDP reached 631.1 billion yuan (US$97 billion) and the gross profit of the manufacturing sector jumped 40 percent to 62.4 billion yuan.

The added value of high-tech industries in the province rose 14.8 percent, compared with 14.6 percent for the machinery equipment industry.

The per capita disposable income of urban residents in Zhejiang grew 13 percent to 9,974 yuan year on year while that of rural residents rose 14.9 percent to 5,151 yuan, the bureau said.

However, the province's consumer price index also went up 5.2 percent in the first quarter.

More parking

Hangzhou plans to add 10,000 parking spaces in the downtown area, the city's urban planning department said on Tuesday.

Under its plan announced this week, more public parking lots will be built near hospitals, schools and other major service facilities.

A large parking lot is being built under the sports ground of downtown Jianlan High School and will be put into service by the end of this year. It can hold 97 cars. Two schools in Hangzhou are building underground parking lots with a combined capacity of 268 cars. Four more schools will follow suit this year.

Parking spaces will also be built under parks and greeneries to provide an additional 15,000 parking spaces by 2013.

US culture for free

Classic American movies have been shown free in cinemas run by a Hangzhou cinema chain. It is part of the American Cultural Wind activities being held in the city till tomorrow.

Other exchange programs covered music, fine arts and wine, according to the organizers, which include the Hangzhou government and Sina.com, a popular web portal in China.

A seminar on the works of American writer Saul Bellow was held at Xiaofeng Book Store this week.

Saul Bellow (1915–2005), a winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize for Literature, is best known for his works "Herzog," "Mr Sammler's Planet," "Seize the Day," "Humboldt's Gift" and "Ravelstein."

Cycle race

Two Hong Kong athletes grabbed the men's and women's titles at the 1st International Road Cycling Tournament in Yuhang District on Tuesday.

More than 80 athletes from China, USA, Brazil and Poland competed in the cycling race on a 18-kilometer hilly course in Jingshan Town, which has more than 80 curves and a top altitude of 450 meters.

Hangzhou Tourism Bureau, Hangzhou Sports Bureau and Yuhang District government organized the race to promote a low-carbon and eco-friendly lifestyle.

Food festival

A cooking competition was held on Saturday in Shenglihe Snack Street in Gongshu District in Hangzhou.

The competition, which is a part of a district-level delicious food festival, attracted 95 chefs from 56 restaurants in the district.

The best three contestants at the competition will compete in city-level contests on behalf of the district.

From Tuesday to May 2, as part of the delicious food festival, places such as Dadou Road block, the Shenglihe and Xinyifang areas, Xiaohezhi Street and Shangtanghe scenic town will offer discounts in restaurants. The discounts will include 50 yuan off for every 100 yuan spent, 50 percent off featured cuisine and selected cuisine on sale priced 3 to 5 yuan.
