GDP rises 10.2%
THE gross domestic product of Hangzhou reached 479.05 billion yuan (US$74.85 billion) in the first three quarters of this year, 10.2 percent higher than the same period last year, the Hangzhou Statistics Bureau said this week.
The figures indicate that third-quarter growth has slowed down as it is 0.6 and 0.4 percentage points lower than the first quarter and the first half.
Industries in the city had an added value of 206.82 billion yuan in the first three quarters of the year, up 11 percent from a year earlier. Profits of industrial enterprises increased 18.6 percent year on year. But due to a rise in energy, raw material, labor and financial costs and the appreciation of the yuan, the increase is 12.4 percentage points lower than the first half.
The service industry had an added value of 234.22 billion yuan during the first nine months, 11.2 percent higher than the same period last year.
Retail sales reached 183.96 billion yuan, a year-on-year rise of 18 percent.
Imports and exports from the city also saw a growth slowdown. The total amount was US$47.56 billion in the first three quarters, a year-on-year rise of 24.1 percent. Exports in the first three quarters reached US$31.06 billion, rising 19.2 percent over the same period last year.
Fixed asset investment, however, rose 21.5 percent to 205.678 billion yuan in the first three quarters over the same period last year.
For the first three quarters of the year, the annual disposable income of urban residents rose 12.6 percent to 26,358 yuan while rural residents had an increase of 15.9 percent to 13,833 yuan.
Longer lives
The life expectancy of Hangzhou's female residents will exceed 80 within the next five years, city health officials said this week.
The maternal mortality rate in the city stood at 6.81 per 100,000 last year, the same as the average in developed countries, officials said at the 4th Women and Children's Work Meeting in Hangzhou.
Meanwhile, the infant mortality rate stood at 3.4 per 1,000 and the mortality rate of children under five years old was 4.4 per 1,000 last year. Both figures were among the best in the nation.
Marathon race
More than 23,000 people will participate in the 25th Hangzhou International Marathon on November 6. The event is jointly organized by the Chinese Athletic Association, Hangzhou government and the Sports Bureau of Zhejiang Province.
This year's Hangzhou International Marathon has changed its route from one that circled West Lake to one that connects the lake and the Qiantang River.
The Hangzhou International Marathon has seen the number of participants increase by 20 times from the inaugural race.
Apart from professional distance of 42.195 kilometers, the organizer also developed shorter and more interesting routes to attract semi-professionals, families and couples.
Design contest
The Hangzhou Solid Waste Disposal Control Center is asking the public to submit garbage sorting cartoon mascot designs from October 24 to November 6. The winning designer will be given 10,000 yuan (US$1,573).
Designers are required to submit one cartoon image or a series of five or less, name their designs and explain their ideas. The cartoon images should be simple, clear and cute.
All designs collected will be put online for public voting from November 11 to 16. The designs winning the most votes will then be evaluated by a judging committee from November 18 to 21.
