Gadgets and gizmos galorein store at electronics trade fair

THE annual electronics and information technology fair opens in September. Chen Qianqin reports. The latest electronics and information technology from China and abroad will be showcased and traded from September 10 to 13 at Hangzhou's third annual high-tech extravaganza.

The four-day event will provide business opportunities for industries at home and overseas. The Electronics and Information Fair (EIF) is a business-to-business sales platform for some of the most powerful brands in the electronic information industry.

The event will be held at the Hangzhou Peace International Convention & Exhibition Center.

Since China's accession to the World Trade Organization in 2001, its electronic information and communication industries have expanded rapidly.

The event is organized by the Hangzhou Municipal Government and the Taiwan Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association, as in the previous two years.

Almost 500 booths of the 1,000 available have already been booked in the exhibition area of 20,000 square meters.

More than 20,000 visitors are expected and business deals are expected to reach US$400 million.

The fair features computers, consumer electronics, telecommunication products, photo-electrical products, security products, electrical machine equipment, electronics for autos and subways, e-commerce value-added services, e-commerce derivatives, smart cards, wireless sensor networks, all-media projects and 3G technologies.

There will also be an area for business-to-customer digital household appliances and an area for overseas reverse procurement.

Participants - manufacturers, experts and consumers - last year came from the United States, France, Japan, South Korea and 12 other countries and regions.

The scale is larger this year, despite the economic downturn. It features advanced production and the modern service industry. One section is devoted to electronic information items, another to advanced technologies and applications.

Participants so far include well-known enterprises from Taiwan, Changchun (Jilin Province), Shenyang (Liaoning Province), Chuzhou (Anhui Province), Kunshan and Changzhou (Jiangsu Province) and Ningbo and Cixi (Zhejiang Province), among others.

Foreign trade groups participating this year include EEAIC from Thailand, AI Group and GWL from Australia, IVEX from Spain, ISC from Singapore, COAI from India, KES from South Korea, JETRO and Soft Bank from Japan.

The fair also welcomes local branches of international procurement centers, such as LG from South Korea, Magna from Canada, Heico from the United States, Pan-Asia electronics, Fujitsu from Japan, Europa and Silver-Tech from Europe.

The Hangzhou fair is cooperating with Arab Asia Business TV and invited buyers from the Middle East.

The 2009 EIF will carry on the "exhibition plus summit" format, which was well received last year. Each of the city's six summits this year has a distinct theme and attracts talents and experts in various fields to share their thoughts and perspective on market trends.

Of these gatherings, the 3G Industry Chain Cooperation Alliance International Summit particularly stands out, as 3G licenses were granted in China early this year.

Brand-new service packs and products in 3G wireless network, cell phone television and video calling will provide many business opportunities.
