Gas from garbage
HANGZHOU is to use a biological process to transform kitchen garbage into biogas, on the largest scale in the country so far.
Kitchen Garbage's Separation and Reduction Project is run by Hangzhou Environment Group.
With a construction area of more than 5,700 square meters, it features Italian and Belgian technology and is able to process 200 tons of garbage every day.
The project firstly separates kitchen garbage from plastics, cloth, glass and metals. Then the organic kitchen garbage from the process is used to produce biogas.
A center and the necessary equipment are expected to be ready by the end of the year, and the project is set to be up and running at the beginning of next year.
Hangzhou began garbage sorting in 2010, and statistics show that kitchen waste accounts for more than 55 percent of all garbage collected.
