Gitai gets Gallic film gala going
THE Second Hangzhou French Movie Week is underway at Xinhua Cinema until this weekend, and noted Israeli film director Amos Gitai attended the opening ceremony in Hangzhou last Saturday.
Involving eight French films made by top directors, the activity held by Alliance Frane aise of Hangzhou is to "promote French culture to the Chinese, especially young people," said Xu Sujuan, office director of Alliance Frane aise.
Amos Gitai, whose two films "Kadosh" ("Sacred") and "Free Zone" are showing as part of the weeklong movie festival, appeared at the opening ceremony and had a meeting with fans in Hangzhou.
The director from Israel who has adopted Paris as his second home is renowned for his highly political documentaries and fictional films about the Middle East, and his representative works include "Alila," "Promised Land" and "Free Zone."
Next year, the director will visit China, especially Shanghai, frequently to film his new movie "Shanghai, I Love You" in cooperation with Shanghai Studio.
It will be the first of his films that isn't about the Middle East, because he is "very interested in Shanghai" and would like to "share the experience," said Gitai.
The film will be released in 2012, and will probably be the first episode of a series, yet the director hasn't decided the billing yet.
Born in Israel, Gitai left his hometown for France in 1983 when his film "Field Diary," which took a critcial look at the Lebanon War, was partially censored by the military.
While in France, Gitai directed a series of fiction films that led to great acclaim in his adopted country. The major themes of his work tend to be intellectual and didactic, which is in contrast to his extremely visual and non-linear style of filmmaking.
