Gobal gathering of brainchildren

ROBOTS that write Chinese characters, woolen caps with funny ears, a new Ferrari model unveiled for the first time on the Chinese mainland and many ingenious designs are showcased at the Hangzhou Cultural and Creative Industry Expo.

Running from tomorrow to next Monday, the 2012 China Hangzhou Cultural and Creative Industry Expo lures 1,500 exhibitors from China and overseas, offering the best in design from Italy, France, the UK, America and other countries and regions.

It is expected to attract 400,000 visitors over the four days, including 120,000 professionals.

This year's highlight is the expo's collaboration with ADI, Italy's Industrial Design Association, and nine Italian luxury brands including Armani, Gucci and Prada. Visitors can feast their eyes on both fashion and cutting-edge industrial design.

"Italian designers decided to join the expo after one-year investigation," said Yu Jianguo, deputy executive director of the organizing committee of Hangzhou Cultural and Creative Industry Expo. "The expo serves as a platform to help local designers communicate with international masters as well as to let more people know local designers and their brands."

Hangzhou's cultural and creative industry is forging strong links with countries famous for design and is establishing its own international reputation.

Last month, Hangzhou International Design Week attracted designers from many countries, including Canada, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Japan, the UK and United States. Designers from China also exhibited works and gave talks.

Earlier this year, Hangzhou joined the UNESCO Net of Global Creative Cities and Craft and Folk Art Cities.

This is the sixth year of the annual expo that helps create a platform for Hangzhou to grow as a city of quality and good living.

The exhibition has been expanded this year to three venues: the Hangzhou Peace International Convention and Exhibition Center (the main venue in the past), the Zhejiang World Trade International Exhibition Center and the Baima Lake Creative Eco-City in south Binjiang District.

Exhibition space covers 60,000 square meters.

Titled "Crossover - Inheritance, Design and Innovation," the expo aims to drive more cross-boundary cooperation and accelerate industrial transformation of cultural and creative industry.

Each of the three venues features different themes and exhibitions.
