Going underground

ZIZHI Tunnel, set to become Hangzhou's longest tunnel when it's complete in around five years, will link Zijingang Road near Xixi Wetland and Zhipu Road in Zhijiang area, officials said.

It will have three lanes on each side. Traffic around West Lake is expected to be greatly improved once the tunnel is open.

Driving at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour, it will take only about 15 minutes to pass through the 14-kilometer structure.

Construction is expected to get under way by the end of the year.
