Gold ring in lung
Doctors at Zhejiang University No. 1 Hospital removed a gold ring from the lung of an 82-year-old man who kept coughing for more than two weeks.
The ring was about 2 centimeters in diameter. “I’ve never fished a gold object from someone’s lung. It was so shiny!” Dr Pan Zhijie tweeted on his WeChat account after the surgery.
The old man surnamed Li went to a community clinic to get his cough checked out and a doctor gave him some medicine. But his coughing persisted and got worse and on the morning of June 7 he was having trouble breathing and was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. Doctors then found a strange object lodged in his right lung.
But Li said he had no idea how the ring entered his lung. His relatives suspected he might have swallowed the ring when taking his pills.
“We have seen patients recently who choked on loquat pits,” Pan said. The hospital receives about 100 such patients each year, mostly seniors and kids.
Pan advised old people to remove their artificial teeth when going to bed and avoid laughing when eating.
