Good deeds pledge

HANGZHOU has promised to do "10 good deeds" for residents this year, the city government announced in a working report.

The city will add 300 more buses and eight new bus routes. Construction on the phase-one project of Bus Rapid Transit 7 will be concluded, while 60 kilometers of new bus lanes will be put into use. A total of 25 bus stops and sidewalks along 100 roads in downtown areas will undergo renovation.

In another project, work will start on 38,103 affordable homes.

The city has also pledged to carry out air monitoring procedures based on the more precise PM2.5 air pollution measurement and endeavor to achieve fine air quality for more than 90 percent of the year.

Some 40 freight docks will be closed or relocated to protect drinking water sources, while sewage disposal will be upgraded by restoring 19 yellow sand docks and dikes. The city will also continue sewage removal and pipe laying projects, with a target of removing 25,000 tons of sewage a day and dredging 30 rivers.

A monitoring system on food security will cover small restaurants, and the city will promote a tracking system for fresh agricultural products to ensure a pass rate of above 96 percent.

The city also expects to finish 100,000 square meters of rooftop greenery and to renovate 80 alleyways.

Also under the pledges, rural residents will have access to 25,000 digital movies and at least 10,000 cultural events, and the city will add 600 service stations and 120 cafeterias for the aged.

The city will also renovate the homes of 25,800 rural households and 2,500 dilapidated buildings. Another 50,000 parking spots, including 8,000 public spaces, will be created, the city pledged.

Beautiful gesture

WU Juping, known as the "Most Beautiful Mother," last Thursday donated 50,000 yuan (US$7,937) to the Fund for Justice and Courage at Hangzhou Public Security Bureau.

Last October, she gave the same amount to a charity group to help poverty-stricken children in the Bijie area of Guizhou Province with winter clothing.

Wu, 31, earned the title of "Most Beautiful Mother" after catching a toddler who fell from the 10th floor of an apartment last July. The girl sustained several fractures and nerve damage, while Wu suffered a broken left arm. Both Wu and the girl fully recovered.

Afterwards Wu received an award of 100,000 yuan from a Beijing entrepreneur and decided to donate the money to help people in need.

Tea event brewing

HANGZHOU considers designating Guyu, one of the 24 solar terms in the Chinese lunar calendar, as Public Tea Day, local legislators said this week.

Guyu - which means "grain rain" in English - signals the arrival of rains needed by crops. This year, Guyu falls on April 20.

A gala ceremony will be held along the Bai Causeway in West Lake on that date, where visitors can sample tea varieties for free, watch tea-themed performances, take part in a tea quiz and try their hand at tea picking and baking.

Tea leaves picked before Guyu are called Yuqian tea while those picked afterwards are less tender.

Hangzhou is one of the top tea producers in China with an annual harvest of 18,000 tons and an annual tea income of more than 2 billion yuan (US$317 million).

Forensic link-up

DR Henry Chang-Yu Lee, one of the world's foremost forensic scientists, became a consultant of Hangzhou police this week.

Lee, 74, shared his experiences with city police at the ceremony.

Some 25 detectives from Hangzhou Public Security Bureau will attend a 21-day training course at the Henry C Lee Institute of Forensic Science at the University of New Haven next month.

Lee is the chief emeritus for Scientific Services for the State of Connecticut and an occasional lecture professor in forensic science at the University of New Haven.

Parks popular

THE main parks in Hangzhou received 149 million yuan (US$23.7 million) in admission fees in the first two months of the year, according to Hangzhou Statistics Bureau.

Nearly 5.8 million visitors went to the parks during that period - 0.2 percent higher than the same period last year.

Meanwhile, retail sales in the city rose 11.7 percent year-on-year to 44.9 billion yuan. The hotel, restaurant, jewelry, cosmetics and automobile sectors saw sales jump by more than 10 percent.
