The animated series tells the story of the Great Wall's construction over mountainous terrain under the rule of Emperor Ying Zheng of the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC) and a secret plan to build a huge ship on the sea.

Bridge inspection

Qianjiang No. 2 Bridge across the Qiantang River will be closed for inspections after traffic volume was found to eclipse its design capacity.

The bridge, part of the Hangzhou-Ningbo Expressway, has been in operation for nearly 20 years. It was designed to handle 25,000 vehicles per day, but engineers found the average is now 67,000 vehicles, with peak volumes surpassing 80,000.

The bridge will be closed from 6am to 5pm for inspections until Sunday. It will also be shut down from 10pm to 5am from December 20-22.

Rivers rehabilitated

TWO hundred rivers in Hangzhou have been rehabilitated in the past five years.

Altogether 451 kilometers of rivers were targeted under the rehabilitation program, according to the construction authority of Hangzhou.

Pedestrian roads stretching 40.5 kilometers were built along the rivers during the period. Four water travel routes in the city attracted 1.58 million visitors in the first 11 months of the year. The four routes have a total length of 64.7 kilometers.

Hangzhou authorities plan to turn the city into another "Oriental Venice" by connecting the city's major waterways including the Qiantang River, West Lake, Great Canal and Xiang Lake.

Gas pipelines

Construction has been completed on high pressure natural gas pipelines at Zhijiang Station, a gas supply and regulator station, Hangzhou Gas (Group) Co Ltd announced this week.

The pipelines, stretching about 10 kilometers, play an integral part in the city's multi-gas supply project. Hangzhou began building the pipelines two years ago and has now completed almost half of them. The ring-shaped pipelines will reach Linping in the north, Fuyang and Yuhang in the west, Xiasha to east, and Binjiang and Xiaoshan to the south.

More than 10 regulator stations, gas stations and emergency gas source stations are located along the pipelines. The network will guarantee the domestic gas supply in the future and provide a reliable industrial and commercial gas supply.

Better air quality

THE air quality in Hangzhou has improved during the first 11 months of the year, the Hangzhou Environmental Protection Bureau announced.

The number of days with good air quality in the downtown area reached 307 over the 11-month period, 12 more than the same period in 2010.

However, some residents said they still thought smoggy days had increased in the city.

"Hangzhou is surrounded by hills on three sides so it is difficult for airborne particles to disperse," Hong Shengmao of the Hangzhou Environment Center's Monitoring Station said.

In addition, 222,400 new vehicles have hit Hangzhou streets by the end of October. The large number of cars had caused an increase in road congestion, pollution and microscopic airborne particles, Guo Dan, director of the Hangzhou Environmental Protection Bureau, said.
