Great places to view autumn colors

Autumn is the perfect time to visit Hangzhou. But as the foliage turns and the weather cools, what are the city鈥檚 best seasonal attractions? The Hangzhou Tourism Commission recently put together a list of the best local fall sites and attractions. Here, Shanghai Daily offers a run-down of the list鈥檚 highlights.

Beishan Road

Beishan Road is the perfect place to observe the changing weather on the foliage surrounding West Lake.

Palm-like leaves cover sidewalks, rustle in the wind and produce a pleasant cracking sound when stepped on. In the lake itself, the lotus flowers, which spread their glorious petals throughout summer, droop under the weight of their seedpods. Their bent stalks mirrored against the calm lake surface create a meditative and solemnly beautiful scene.

Lingyin Scenic Area

Maple trees are a hallmark of the autumn scenery in Hangzhou, and one of the best places to see them is at the Lingyin Scenic Area. Inside the area, visitors can view numerous varieties of colorful maples on peaks above the Lingyin Temple.

Nine Streams and Eighteen Creeks

To some, the entrance of the Nine Streams and Eighteen Greeks might seem like nothing special. Walking through the secluded site though, the meandering waterways and orange maple trees conjure a unique feeling of calm that is sure to transport visitors to a place of inner serenity.

Manjuelong

This mountainous area is dotted with various kinds of osmanthus trees, with white, brown and gold flowers all blossoming during autumn. Manjuelong is considered one of the best places to view and admire osmanthus, as there are more than 7,000 trees along its mountain paths. Numerous hostels and guest houses have also opened in the area to cater to the growing number of visitors.

Chaohui Park

At more than 100 meters, Huayuan Lane near Chaohui Park contains some 300 gingko trees.

As the leaves of these trees change color, this sun-dappled little path is an excellent place to stroll. On clear days, the lemon-yellow leaves against the blue sky are sure to warm any heart against the chilly fall air.

Hangzhou Arboretum

The research-oriented Hangzhou Arboretum shows its true colors when fall hits. In addition to its stunning fall foliage, the facility is home to 800 varieties of chrysanthemum which are set to bloom at the end of the month as part of a giant display celebrating the flower.

Xixi Wetland

During autumn, visitors to the Xixi Wetland should wander amid its delightful persimmon trees and go boating among its white-and-silver reeds.

Within the wetland鈥檚 boating tour area, visitors can enjoy the shade of the blooming catkins within the narrower passages. In the wider parts, passengers can cast a net with local fishermen. Those who pull up fish can have them cooked at the end of their tour
