Great spots for memorable wedding photos

CHINESE couples often go to great lengths to ensure they have tremendous wedding photos. This includes looking for a good photographer and scouting for wonderful locations with beautiful scenery.

Of course, Hangzhou is blessed with numerous sites boasting gorgeous scenery. Shanghai Daily provides some suggestions on the best places in town for wedding photographs.

Beishan Road

It is considered the hottest location for wedding photos. The road faces picturesque West Lake and circles the north side of Baoshi Hill. Since the road is dotted with former residencies of famous people, newlyweds often pick it as the backdrop for “antique” wedding photos.

Baoqing Villa features baroque architecture with square columns, arched doors and windows, and red brickwork. It’s commonly known as the “most beautiful building on Beishan Road.” In the early 1900s, the villa was a hangout for socialites, politicians and scholars.

Qiushui Villa also makes a worthy backdrop for couples seeking interesting wedding pictures. Built by Shi Liangcai (1880-1934), who owned Shen Bao newspaper in Shanghai, the villa was dedicated and named after his second wife, Shen Qiushui. Today the villa is Xinxin Hotel.

West Lake Expo Museum is another nice spot. Although the interior features a modern exhibition space, the exterior retains its original style from the 1920s.

Yu Hu Wan and Wu Gui Tan

Couples taking wedding photos often frown upon passersby who disturb them, and finding tranquil places at popular scenic spots can be tricky. But experienced photographers know of a wonderland hidden in lush vegetation on the west side of West Lake.

Yu Hu Wan and Wu Gui Tan are characterized by wonderful natural scenery and few people.

These wetlands are a newly opened area and few people venture here, providing photographers with a peaceful place to snap wedding photos. With a little patience, photographers can find secluded pools and wildlife to make the backdrop even more special.

Zhijiang campus of Zhejiang University

Couples who meet and fall in love while in university often like taking wedding photos on a school campus. Hangzhou has a couple of universities boasting elegant buildings and beautiful surroundings. The Zhijiang campus of Zhejiang University stands out due to its distinctive buildings and great academic ambience. Settled along the Qiantang River and close to Liuhe Pagoda, the campus is on a hill and covered with lush vegetation. It was originally built in 1897.

Today, the university’s library and Severance Hall are frequently used for the backdrop of wedding photos.

The interiors of the buildings still have an old-fashioned look — white walls and ceilings, russet floor and stairs, as well as vintage lamps.

A 74-year-old bell tower and Gothic chapel also offer an exotic backdrop. Since the campus has no flat boulevards but plenty of hilly paths sheltered by towering trees, newlyweds can also ascend the hill to take some photos in natural surroundings.

Tangqi Town

Some couples prefer old streets or watertowns featuring south China-style black-and-white houses to be the backdrop.

Since Qinghefang Street and Xiaohezhi Street are packed with tourists most of the time, couples can check out Tangqi Town in Yuhang District.

Years ago, the local government provided funds to renovate the centuries-old houses and lanes. The original ancient appearance remains along with Guangji Bridge, Guopu Ancient Well, the Qianlong Imperial Stela, the Qixi School Stela and Shuinan Temple.

Taishidi Lane, Yujia Lane, Shenjia Lane, and Shuibei Street are considered the best settings in Tangqi for wedding photos.
