'Green' cars

HANGZHOU is one of the five cities where the central government will subsidize the purchase, registration and operation of alternative-energy cars.

The one-time allocation to Hangzhou from the Ministry of Finance will also help the city build six more electric car charging stations, raising the city total to 12.

For Hangzhou residents buying new-energy cars, the maximum allowance for mixed-energy vehicles is 50,000 yuan (US$7,320) and for electric vehicles it's 60,000 yuan.

The new charging stations will be able to handle as many as 1,000 cars a day.

Helping Xinjiang

China is pairing cities across the country with cities and areas in far west Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to improve people's livelihood, especially in very poor areas.

Hangzhou is playing its part in assisting Xinjiang and dispatched 14 government officials to Aksu County, almost 1,000 kilometers from the capital city of Urumqi and 466 kilometers from Kashgar.

They will work in various departments providing industrial, educational and medical support and help resolve problems of daily living. The officials will conduct research this month and begin their projects in July.

Exam time

Around 50,000 students in Hangzhou will take part in this year's national college entrance examination starting on Monday, 3.3 percent fewer than last year.

All mobile phones and wireless devices are prohibited and possession will be considered cheating.

Students are encouraged to consider the traffic conditions on the way to the test centers; those who are unfamiliar with the centers are urged to visit them after 3pm on Sunday, the day before.

New terminal

The new international terminal at Xiaoshan International Airport will begin operations next month.

The 900-million-yuan (US$132 million) terminal covers 96,000 square meters and will be able to accommodate the world's largest airliner, the Airbus A380, for which a special corridor has been built.

Passengers will spend less time at check-ins and security checks.

Other airport construction is underway and second-phase projects are expected to be completed by the end of 2011 and become operational in the first half of 2012.

Calling reporters

Hangzhou has launched a journalism competition to encourage more Chinese and international journalists to cover the city, its modern economy and culture.

The deadline is September 30. The submissions should be published or broadcast between April 1 and September 30. Prizes will be awarded in autumn.

The competition is open to all accredited media: print, broadcast and online. Foreign journalists registered at the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo Coordination are encouraged to enter.

The competition is called "Year of Expo, Perception of Hangzhou."

There will be 20 Xiangzhang Golden Awards. In addition to 3,000 yuan (US$439) in prize money, winners will also receive free three-day VIP tours of the city. Another 60 winners will receive cash and free tickets to Hangzhou Xixi National Wetland Park and Qiandao Lake.

Metro progress

Work is underway on 31 stations along Metro Line 1 in Hangzhou, and transport officials aim to open the line before National Day in 2012.

The Hangzhou Subway Group plans to complete 90 percent of the basic construction this year, install equipment and systems in 2011 and finally open the line in 2012.

The second-phase plan, from 2010 to 2016, includes subway lines No. 1, 4, 5 and 6.

By 2050, Hangzhou's Metro transport is expected to have 10 lines, covering nearly 450 kilometers to better link counties around Hangzhou with the city itself.

Powering up

After 72 hours of continuous work, the 220KV Guali Substation extension project has been completed and resumed operations on Tuesday.

Nearly 1,000 commercial electricity users coordinated and reduced production and electricity use.

Around 120,000 kilowatts of electricity was cut since May 29 to enable the substation work to proceed.

Pack it in

Hangzhou will build an environmentally friendly Asian Packaging Center, officials announced at the 2010 International Packaging Fair beginning this week in Beijing.

The fair emphasizes creative and environmentally friendly packaging.

Hangzhou's center will use international resources and combines technology, research, information and culture. It serves as an exchange platform for trade in the packaging industry.
