Hands and hearts go out to quake survivors

CIVIL affairs authorities in Hangzhou report nearly 7.83 million yuan (US$1.15 million) in donations for Yushu earthquake relief, including 3 million from the municipal government.

The numbers represent the donations as of Tuesday, but donations are still coming in to aid the Qinghai Province quake relief.

The quake on April 14 claimed more than 2,000 lives, and left thousands of people injured and homeless when mud housing and other structures collapsed.

Scenes of the disaster and relief touched the hearts of many people in Hangzhou.

Teachers from Hangzhou Qinglan Primary School swiftly made voluntary donations of almost 8,000 yuan in less than 20 minutes. Retired teachers from the same school donated another 5,300 yuan.

An anonymous man donated 50,000 yuan to the Hangzhou Red Cross and said that his boss called from an overseas trip and directed him to make the donation.

Many companies and schools organized charity bazaars to raise money for emergency relief.
