Hangzhou bikes go electric
THE first 5,000 hybrid public bikes will be deployed in Binjiang District in the south of Qiantang River, using solar power, the Hangzhou public bike operator announced on Tuesday.
By scanning QR code on new energy electricity box, users can rent a battery box and plug it into the battery holder at the bottom of the bike basket. The electricity is solar.
For safety, the maximum speed of the hybrid bike is set at 15 kilometers an hour. And users can ride free for less than one hour. Renting of the battery cost 1 yuan (15 UScents) for half an hour. In Binjiang District, 338 service stations with the new energy electricity boxes will be set up.
The new energy scheme will be expanded city-wide next year after the test run in Binjiang. The public bike system set up in 2008 has served 760 million people time with total distance of 2.3 billion kilometers. It has become one of the largest public bike systems in China.
