Hangzhou scoops prestigious tourism prize

HANGZHOU HAS scooped one of the most prestigious prizes in travel after being named as one of the 15 best practice cities in tourism by UNWTO, the world’s most distinguished tourism organization. It won the award for persistently moving forward to promote protection and development on cultural and historical resources in an innovative manner.

Hangzhou Tourism Commission launched the social resources and tourist-visiting project 13 years ago, the first of this kind in China. After years of development and promotion, the project has covered more than 120 spots, including all aspects of tourism, from agricultural and industrial sightseeing to folk life and social politics.

In September, the tourism commission issued an official standard to regulate the daily operation and service of these places. Meanwhile, it elected 20 recommending spots and 20 demonstrating sites through online vote and peer review. They are expected to span the city’s reputation of the best global tourism city in China.

As the only best practice award winner representative in Asia Pacific region, Hangzhou is also invited to introduce its experience in the annual meeting of UNWTO in Kuala Lumpur next month.

The global tourism best practice city selection started last December. UNWTO sent expert teams to carry out research and on-site performance appraisal among the organization’s 193 member nations or regions. Evaluation embraced all aspects of economy, environment, urban management, culture, society, scientific and business.
