Here comes the parade!
THE West Lake International Carnival has been rocking Hangzhou this week and will end in a blaze of color tomorrow with a parade featuring more than 500 Chinese folk artists and fellow musicians and singers from all over the world.
During the week, performers from 14 countries and regions have been bringing their traditional folk arts to Hangzhou, Zhuji, Jiande and Chun'an.
This year, in contrast to previous carnivals, the event incorporated the 10th CIOFF Asian and Oceanian Folklore Festival - the first time CIOFF (International Council of Organizations for Folklore Festivals and Folk Art) has held an arts festival in Hangzhou.
CIOFF is an international non-governmental organization in formal consultative relations with UNESCO. CIOFF held its sixth festival in Kunming, Yunnan Province. It was delighted to be able to hold this year's festival in Hangzhou.
Paper streamers, doves and loud cheer brought up the curtain on the carnival on Gushan Mountain on Tuesday, with delegations in traditional ethical clothes performing arts that are rich of distinct ethnic features.
These included Korean mask dances, step dancing from Croatia and an orchestra from Austria - all groups which have long experience of appearing at international festivals and competitions.
Canadian 19-year-old Angelica Smigielski, whose family members are all professional dancers, summed up the feelings of many participants: "It's a great carnival and every delegation displays different dances so we can learn from each other."
Carnival closing ceremony
Date: August 29, 4pm-9pm
Admission: Free
Address: The parade will march on the Southern Song Royal Street area, starting from Drum Tower and along the Zhongshan Road M. to Hefang Street and end at Wushan Square.
