Heroin seized
CUSTOMS officials recently made their first drug seizure at the new Xiaoshan International Airport, seizing 1.15 kilograms of heroin from Southeast Asia.
Staff noticed a young Southeast Asian woman hovering over her luggage, and when it passed through the X-ray machine they saw clearly a deep green-colored shadow. When they opened the luggage they found two rectangular packs in tinfoil, which proved to be heroin.
Saving power
To save power and ensure residential supplies, factories using a high level of electricity are suspending operations for 15 days.
The city has 400,000-600,000 kwh less electricity these days than the same period of last year due to the hot weather.
The government launched six projects to reduce industrial use of electricity by 276 high power-usage factories. From July 1 to September 30, factories are suspending operations for 15 days, on a rolling basis. The suspension applies to the non-metallic minerals industry, textiles, paper and other sectors.
Taking the plunge
Around 325 swimmers from 38 colleges and universities around China have taken part in the 11th National Undergraduate Swimming Competition, which ends today, at the Zhejiang College of Finance and Economics.
Schools included Shanghai Tongji University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Beijing Business University, Zhejiang College of Finance and Economics, and other 33 institutions. They competed in five major categories.
Expo visitors
A GIRL form Shandong Province has become the 500,000th visitor to the Hangzhou Pavilion at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai. She received a gift.
"I feel so lucky that I can be the No. 500,000," said the daughter who came with her mother from Jinan City. They were making their third visit to the World Expo.
"The Hangzhou Pavilion is great, and I really want to pay a visit to Hangzhou. It must be more beautiful. I will take my daughter to Hangzhou next year," said the mother.
Prices rise
The consumer price index in Hangzhou rose 4.4 percent in June, the Hangzhou Statistics Bureau reported.
Although it's 0.3 percent less than that of May, it is still 2.9 percent higher than the national CPI index and close to the 5.5 ceiling set by the government.
Food prices accounted for the greatest increase - 8.1 percent over May, but the cost of clothing fell by 2.3 percent.
Bye-bye rain
Hangzhou residents are celebrating the ending of the monthlong hot and humid "plum rain" season, the longest summer rains since the year 2000.
Rains and humid weather descended on June 17 and lasted until July 17.
The starting date and the ending date were later than normal and the rain was heavier than usual, the weather bureau said.
The average rainfall this season over 30 days was 289.7 millimeters per day.
It was especially heavy on June 18 and July 8 when nearly 200 millimeters fell within six hours on both days.
Buy, buy, buy
Hangzhou's consumption and retail sales soared in the first half of the year and cars topped the list as the most popular item in the car-crazy city.
According to the Hangzhou Statistics Bureau, the total volume of consumption was 100 billion yuan (US$14.7 billion), one quarter of which was spent on autos.
Hangzhou residents spent nearly 22 billion yuan on autos, a 32.8-percent increase of the same period last year.
