Highlighting Hangzhou’s unique guesthouses

As one of east China’s leading tourist destinations, Hangzhou is already packed with an abundance of hotels and resorts.

But this hasn’t slowed growth of the city’s burgeoning guesthouse industry, which hospitality experts believe could rake in as much as 1.3 billion yuan (US$204.75 million) in revenue in 2017.

Many of Hangzhou’s guesthouses offer more than simple bed-and-breakfast service. Some of the best local guesthouses boast creative designs, high-quality amenities and tranquil surroundings.

Here are five prominent guesthouses to consider during your next trip to Hangzhou.

Hangzhou Longjing Mood Guesthouse

Longjing Mood Guesthouse is one of dozens of guesthouses and youth hostels located in Siyanjing Village. Yet owner Chong Ge likes to claim that “our garden is the best among the neighbors.”

Chong might not be wrong. Right at the entrance of the guesthouse is a 300-plus-square-meter garden. A spacious lawn, flowers, cane chairs and European pavilions infuse this blissful setting with a pleasant holiday atmosphere. There’s also a stage where guests can play guitar, sing and dance into the night.

At the end of a stream in the garden stands the main building with 20 guest rooms. The first floor features rooms decorated in Baroque style, while those on the second are done up with Art Deco decor. The third floor has a countryside style, with fireplaces, wooden roofs and French windows offering views of rolling hills outside.

Tealyseeche

Founded in 2010, Tealyseeche was one of Hangzhou’s first boutique guesthouses. Since then, it’s been recognized by travelers for its tasteful decor, convenient location and impeccable hospitality.

Each of its 29 rooms has been done in a different style, including Thai, Chinese, Baroque and American. Each room also features its own balcony, bath tub and sofa.

But part of Tealyseeche’s appeal is what’s outside. Just minutes away are the Su Causeway, Longjing tea plantation and Hupao Spring. To better explore these and other attractions, bikes are available for rent at the reception area.

Despite its prime location, the guesthouse offers plenty of peace, as it’s tucked away in the middle of a hill.

When night falls, owner Lao Ni likes to treat his guests to tea. He is also fond of giving out local cuisine recommendations and helping travelers navigate the city.

Manshu Inn

Hangzhou has a strong relationship with Buddhism, as evidenced by the many temples found along its surrounding hills. Indeed, about a century ago these temples housed several well-known monks and literati, including famed poet Su Manshu (1884–1918).

The Manshu Inn sits near the Faxi Temple, Fajing Temple and Lingyin Temple and is named after Su. Today, it attracts many believers in Buddhism.

The rooms are decorated in traditional Eastern style, with white walls and simple wooden furniture. Rooms overlook either a tea garden or a yard planted with bamboo.

Metoo House

Many in Hangzhou are familiar with the Metoo Cafe, a local hangout run by a group of designers. That same crew is also responsible for Metoo House, a stylish wood-and-glass guesthouse built onto the slope of a hill. And, with only five rooms, visitors are encouraged to book their stay several months in advance.

Vegetables — including basil and tomatoes — are grown on-site and used in its breakfasts.

In keeping with the laid-back, natural atmosphere, rooms lack televisions and telephones.

Behind this structure are seven villas, which together contain 58 guest rooms all decorated with distinctive themes and styles — including Mediterranean and moonlight.
