Historic site secured

The project to preserve the Liangzhu Historical Site has been approved by the Zhejiang Province government and will start soon. It is scheduled to finish by December 2016.

The Neolithic heritage site will be transformed into a park and will charge admission when it reopens to the public.

Located in Yuhang District, the site contains a rich deposit of artifacts from the Neolithic Liangzhu Culture which existed 4,300 to 5,200 years ago. The site is divided into six sections. The biggest one is believed to be the site of a royal palace.

The site was discovered in 2007 but about 600 households and some 40 factories at the site hindered archaeological excavation.

Now, more than 590 families have signed relocation contracts and will leave by the end of this year.

The 40 or so factories will also be relocated to make way for the preservation project.
