Hot springs soothe body and soul in steaming, bubbling super soak

HOT springs make for a soothing getaway in the winter. A good long soak can rejuvenate the mind and provide health benefits to the body.

Xin'an River Hot Spring, built one year ago in Jiande near Hangzhou, is a good option for a weekend trip.

The hot spring is along the Xin'an River in Jiande and has a natural hot sulphur spring that contains 3.07 milligrams of hydrogen sulphide per kilogram of water, more than half the national standard of sulphur content in curative mineral water.

Sulphur is used primarily to soothe rashes caused by eczema and diaper rash. But it is also known to help protect the body against toxins in the environment. In addition, people with arthritis may find pain relief from taking a soothing bath in hot sulfur springs.

The sulphur spring was discovered in 1987 when a panel was looking for petroleum. They didn't find oil, but they did find a hot spring well 700 meters below the surface. In 2009, a larger hot sulphur spring was discovered, leading to the creation of Xin'an River Hot Spring.

The resort has two ponds as large as a regular swimming pool, six smaller ponds big enough for a dozen people, as well as three separate rooms that feature one small pond.

The large ponds have small waterfalls and massage chairs that soothe people's neck and back. Some of the small ponds contain Chinese herbs, rice wine or coffee, which have therapeutic effects. Tips:

Bring your own swim suit.

The hot spring only has a public bathroom, so you can wear a swimming suit inside before going to the spring to avoid embarrassment.

The hot spring does not offer accommodation, but there are many hotels in Xin'anjiang Town, which is a 15-minute drive from the hot spring.

Price: Xin'an River Hot Spring costs 136 yuan (US$22) for adults, 60 yuan for children from 1.1 to 1.4 meters, and free for children below 1.1 meters.

Operation hours: 12:30pm to midnight on Friday and Saturday, 2pm to midnight Sunday to Thursday.

Nearby Attractions:

Daci Rock is about 24 kilometers from urban Jiande and is known as a spiritual place among Buddhists. It is also popular among followers of Confucianism.

It is famous for its abbey, the largest sculpture of a standing natural Buddha in the country, as well as a pleasant landscape with a pretty valley and meandering streams.

The ancient Ksitigarbha Abbey is built on the cliff of Yiquan, one of the summits of Daci Rock. Ksitigarbha is a Bodhisattva primarily revered in East Asian Buddhism.

The abbey is half embedded into the rock near the top of the cliff and half protruding into the air.

There are two large Buddhas, one is 147-meter-high and looks like a statue of Ksitigarbha in profile, yet without any artificial fabrication. The other is a double-faced golden Maitreya situated on one peak.

Daci Rock costs 65 yuan for adults and is half price for children from 1.2 to 1.5 meters, and free for children below 1.2 meters. There is also a cable car that offers nice views. It costs 35 yuan (one way).

Jiande is also famous for its large and sweet strawberries.

People can pay 10 yuan to 20 yuan to eat strawberries at several gardens during the harvest season. Strawberries are also sold at market prices to take home.
