Hotels suffer

LUXURY hotels in Hangzhou are serving low-priced fare for guests, such as eggs boiled with tea and soy sauce, as average occupancy rates fell from 66.29 percent in 2011 to 48.8 percent in the first quarter of this year, according to the Hangzhou Catering Industry Association.

The average room rate of a five-star hotel in Hangzhou slipped from 742 yuan in 2011 to 673 yuan last month as the result of a nationwide campaign against official corruption and extravagance since 2012.

More than 20 star-rated hotels around West Lake are offering budget fares priced from 30 yuan to 100 yuan per person. Eggs boiled with tea and soy sauce, called cha ye dan in Chinese, are a popular snack across the country. They are sold on street corners and at bus and train stations and scenic spots.
