Inflation rises 2.5%

HANGZHOU’S consumer price index, the main gauge of inflation, expanded 2.5 percent year on year in May, the National Bureau of Statistics said last week.

A low comparison base and higher food costs were cited as the main reasons for the rise. The bureau said the “carry-over effect” resulting from last year’s low comparison base contributed 1.6 percentage points. Food costs climbed 4.1 percent due to a 20 percent surge in fruit and egg prices.

The national CPI also increased 2.5 percent in May.
