International Sister City Mayors Conference
UP to 29 foreign city mayors attended the Hangzhou International Sister City Mayors Conference 2010 which ended yesterday, and two more cities became Hangzhou's sister cities.
Under the theme "Building a more livable city with good quality of life," the conference attracted more than 200 representatives from home and abroad. As well as foreign delegations of the sister cities, six domestic delegations of sister cities also participated.
At the opening ceremony, Hangzhou became a sister city of Montego Bay in Jamaica, and Nandi of Fiji. Both of them are tourist cities like Hangzhou.
Building a livable city with fast transportation and harmony between humans and nature is a common concern in the face of rapid urbanization. The conference featured a forum on these issues, and delegates discussed three topics: city and livable environment, city and green lifestyle, and city and convenient transportation.
At the forum, mayors shared their practices for what makes a livable city. For example, in Madrid, Spain, it costs only 1.5 euros (US$2.08) to travel from the downtown area to the airport; in Oulu, Finland, the population of elks is bigger than the population of people; and in Lund, Sweden, people who finish work at 4pm can have a picnic in the forest by 4:45pm.
The conference also included a "One Earth" hand-print ceremony, a sister city forest-planting ceremony and site tours.
