International archaeologists

Nearly 30 archaeologists from the US, the UK, France, Italy, Canada, Australia, Nigeria, Mexico, Israel and China visited the Liangzhu ruins in Yuhang District last week.

The archaeologists examined dam ruins at Laohu Mountain and Mojiao Mountain during the visit.

They also discussed the protection of the Liangzhu ruins at an international symposium on the water management system of Liangzhu ancient city, which is part of the 3rd World Archaeology Forum held first in Shanghai and then in Hangzhou.

The flood and irrigation system built more than 5,000 years ago in Liangzhu was rated one of the top 10 archeological finds made in China in 2015.

The Liangzhu ancient city covered 100 square kilometers surrounded by a water system to ease flooding from the nearby Tianmu Mountain.

Liangzhu National Archeology Park will open to the public next year.

It will include a replica village modeled on excavated ruins, a cultural center designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, and a cultural museum designed by British architect David Chipperfield.
