International drama festival grows this year

Tickets are available now to the 2nd Hangzhou International Drama Festival, which will go on stage from September 16 to 30.

The festival has grown and will present more dramas and more fun activities than in the first year.

Last year, the new Hangzhou festival, started by Meng Jinghui, the famous director of the National Theater Company of China, included only five plays.

This year the festival will show 10 dramas, including works from Italy and the Netherlands as well as China.

There are two exhibition dramas, six experimental dramas and two dramas given by college students and offered at no charge.

The organizing committee tried to choose works balancing the tastes of everyday drama lovers and those who like more exotic theater.

Selections include: “Five Clowns and a Chair,” the clown theater from Taiwan; “Death Is Not a Bad Thing,” from Italy; “The Space of Dead,” from the Netherlands; “A Beautiful Day,” directed by Li Jianjun; and “Dieu Tonnerre,” adapted from “Zibuyu” (“What The Masters Would Not Discuss”), the supernatural stories written by Yuan Mei of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

For more traditional drama, Meng’s new play, “Guns, Lies and Roses,” which tells a story of a suicide with an offbeat plot and humor, and “Lu De Shui” will be shown.

There also will be many other fun things to do, including a master theater performance class, a contemporary theater forum, masters’ lectures and a play-reading class. In the master performance class and play-reading class, drama fans will get a chance to get on stage with the guidance of professionals.

In the masters’ lectures, the hosts will invite Shi Hang, a screenwriter and Internet star, and Meng, who will lecture on how drama changes life.

All the four theaters for the drama festival are in downtown area.
