International visitors get to experience city's culture
MORE than 400 foreigners took part in activities held to celebrate the 4th Hangzhou International Day on Tuesday.
Scattering across 11 different routes, they spent a whole day experiencing traditional Chinese culture at more than 100 sites in the city. The cultural aspects included tea, silk, dress, music, art, food, opera, traditional Chinese medicine and architecture.
Each participant also received a "China Mobile International Card," which, like the Hangzhou Citizen Card, can be used for renting public bicycles and travelling on buses.
The day is hosted by the local government to promote the city's image internationally, and the theme was "communication between Eastern and Western lifestyle and culture."
The International Day has been running for three years, and the number of foreign participants increases every year. Last time, around 250 foreigners participated.
The foreigners included government and chambers of commerce officials, media, artists, industrial associations, entrepreneurs and teachers. They are from more than 20 countries and regions, such as the United States, Germany, France, Canada, Brazil, Australia and Russia.
"The tour was extremely interesting for me as this was my first visit to Hangzhou. This city is serene and beautiful, and therefore a natural tourism destination," said Professor David Faraggi, who is from the University of Haifa in Israel and was visiting colleges in Shanghai and Hangzhou.
"It is terrific that we get the opportunity to experience the culture and learn things that we didn't know before, like making tea," said Katie Holmes from the US.
