Internships now the way to work for many

AN internship program targeting Hangzhou natives who are new university or college graduates or those unemployed two years after graduation is producing excellent results. Fei Lai joins the queue.

Hangzhou is developing more than 100 internship bases this year with the aim of providing three- to six-month internships to 5,000-10,000 college and university students within three years to help them find jobs.

The internship program is targeting Hangzhou natives who are new college and university graduates or those unemployed within two years after graduation. Senior students at Hangzhou's universities and colleges can also apply to join the program.

The government will offer the students a monthly subsidy which will equal 70 percent of Hangzhou's minimum monthly salary - 960 yuan (US$141), and a subsidy for commercial insurance worth 50 yuan per person for six months.

"It's difficult for university graduates to find jobs, and it is even more so for students like me who are graduates from secondary colleges," said Wang Yuqiong, who graduated from the Zhejiang Water Conservancy and Hydropower College last year.

"It never occurred to me that it would be an internship that could bring me a job."

In the first few months after graduation, Wang was desperate as few companies replied to his applications.

Finally, he got an internship at the Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Co Ltd after performing well in a written test and an interview. To his surprise, he was offered full employment by the company after working there for six months.

"Although I know the names of the parts of many machines from text books, I had never seen them before I got the job," Wang said. "During the internship, a senior colleague was assigned to teach me how to work on the production line and how to deal with unexpected breakdowns. My performance led to me signing a five-year contract with the company."

Currently, he is endeavoring to become an electrical engineer.

In China, 6.1 million college and university students will graduate this year, adding to the 1 million known unemployed graduates from last year. In Zhejiang Province, about 232,600 will graduate this year, up 8.2 percent from a year earlier.

Statistics from the Hangzhou government show that last year, 3,914 university and college students participated in the internship program. Of these, 2,861 students signed employment contracts with the companies they joined and 111 were employed by other businesses in Hangzhou. The employment rate for students who participated in the program reached 75.9 percent.

While the internship program is in full swing in Hangzhou, the recruitment of university graduates to work as public servants in rural areas and local communities finished its introductory phase on April 26.

A total of 980 positions - 852 in rural areas and 168 in local communities were open.

"It's astonishing that there are so many postgraduates applying. I had doubted that I really needed to apply for a position," said Wang Qin from the Zhejiang Forestry University.

As a new university graduate, Wang planned to apply for a position helping to manage the West Lake scenic area - there were eight positions available. By 11am on the enrollment day, 80 people had applied for the positions including 10 postgraduates.

"Postgraduates or those with higher degrees will get five more points in the written test according to the new rules this year," Wang said. "The competition is fierce."

By 4pm that day, a total of 5,547 applicants had applied for 980 positions. Among them, more than 1,600 had applied for the 57 jobs in Hangzhou's downtown. Job slots in the public service attracted more than 109 postgraduates, most of whom applied for positions downtown.

Officials from Hangzhou's human resources department said university students would have an advantage in applying for positions as public servants in rural areas and local communities.
