Italian photographers truly love Hangzhou

ADVENTURER Marco Polo dubbed Hangzhou “the city of magnificence” long ago. The city’s links with Italy have remained strong through the centuries.

Five Italian photographers were invited to take pictures in the city in a program sponsored by the government. The photographers are Antonello Nusca, Vito Gallo, Rosellina Garbo, Leonardo Salvemini and Aldo Scarpitta.

Nusca’s works have been frequently picked by prominent newspaper and magazines. Gallo is the president of the International Fund for Photography while Garbo is a veteran dancer who focuses her photography on stage art. Salvemini is an experienced photographer and filmmaker while Scarpitta is a 24-year-old photographer and filmmaker who is taking his individual program in Asia.

Take a gander at some of the photos they took during the week.

Antonello Nusca

I am impressed by the city, the beauty and people’s hospitality. The best way to show the city is to present the normal life of citizens, and I have walked around the city to discover subjects, as well as the soul of the city.

Rosellina Garbo

I like the city’s tradition and culture, and I find it interesting that people in the city combine traditional and modern elements in their lives. So I would like to show the bridge between the past and the future.

Aldo Scarpitta

I love the city. It is really nice and is well-preserved. I see people still care about old buildings and make them alive by turning ancient structures into teahouses and bookstores. Through my photos I like to capture some soul of the city, like the mixture of people’s daily life and the city scene.

Vito Gallo

It’s my first time to Asia, and I was surprised by the city’s beauty and people’s hospitality. I went around the city and people were always smiling at me no matter whether they were rich or poor. My photos look at family relationships.

Leonardo Salvemini

Before I came to China I did some research on the Internet, but when I arrived I found the beauty exceeded my expectations. In my work I would like to show how people are in daily life by showing the environment, city scene, and people.
