It's showtime beside the heavenly lake

THE Xihu Music Festival will echo from the lawn of Xihui Tiandi beside the West Lake at the end of the month. It's the second year of the music festival and this year it has attracted even more stars and top musicians. Nie Xin has a sneak preview.

One of the largest-ever Chinese folk music festivals will be held soon by the heavenly West Lake in Hangzhou. On May 28-29, the Xihu Music Festival will ring out on the lawn of Xihui Tiandi beside the lake. It's the second year of the music festival.

The festival will feature a mixture of Chinese folk-based popular songs and original music. Music will be the perfect addition to this setting filled with old tales, heavenly lake scenes and mild early summer winds.

In the upcoming two-day festival, more than 10 shows will be staged and many heavyweight Chinese musicians and groups will be invited to perform.

The line-up includes Xu Wei, one of the best known rock musicians in China; Zhang Chu who is lauded by many as "the loneliest singer-poet" and has remained a major figure in the Chinese rock scene; Taiwanese singer-songwriters Joanna Wang and Chen Shanni, and top local rock bands New Pants and Cold Fairyland.

The Taiwanese singer-songwriter Wang will be one of the most anticipated. Wang's music style incorporates jazz piano, soul, blues and folk-based pop.

The 20-year-old girl is regarded as the Lisa Ono or Norah Jones of China because of her sexy and powerful voice and also her mature musical sense.

She has released two albums. Her first album "Start From Here" made her one of the best-selling female singers in Taiwan, and also saw her recognized as a genius singer-songwriter not only by audiences but also fellow pop musicians.

"I've heard that Hangzhou is a very beautiful place. I think it will be very pleasant to sing in such a place. I am looking forward to performing in the festival, as I like this kind of live show," says Wang.

She will also appear at the Shanghai Grand Theater this June in a solo concert.

Busy with touring, leading Chinese rock musician Xu Wei has just finished a solo concert in Shanghai and will take the stage in the Xihu Music Festival with his distinctive style and tracks from his album "Love Like Youth" which was released in 2008.

Ten local bands will perform live as warm-up acts bringing some of the most creative Chinese pop music to the crowds. The line-up includes Hangzhou local rock band Fantian, independent pop band Milk@Coffee, rock bands Shan Ren, The Bigger Bang Band, Hinter and Today.

"We hope the Xihu Music Festival will become one of the features of Hangzhou. The music festival with its folk themes and original music will make the music environment of Hangzhou more complete," says Zhu Jian, the deputy editor-in-chief of Hangzhou Daily, the organizer of the music festival. "It will be attractive and appealing, and bring a spotlight to Hangzhou."

The stage for the shows will be set open in Xihu Tiandi, the "Xintiandi of Hangzhou."

Covering some 50,000 square meters, including a garden area of 30,000 square meters, Xihu Tiandi was completed in April 2003.

It's in the southern scenic area of the much-adored West Lake and the area boasts a truly profound history of long-standing diverse beauty, adjacent to many popular scenic spots, like Yongjin Pond and "Listening to the Orioles Singing in the Willows," one of the top 10 scenic attractions of the West Lake.

"The outdoor music festival has a metropolitan leisurely life style, and brings people happiness through music," says Chen Shuguang, the director of public relations at Xihu Tiandi.

The coming shows will take over the entire garden area of Xihui Tiandi for the event, three times more than last year. More than 1,000 spectators can be accommodated.

"The open space and pleasant environment will provide audience and performers a great atmosphere to enjoy the show," says Chen. "Onlookers can sit or lie on the lawn, drink coffee and listen to the live music."

The shows will run from 1pm to 10pm. Other activities will be held there in the morning including creative markets, music games and a photographic exhibition.

To ensure more young people join in, the organizer has set the ticket prices at 150 yuan (US$22) for a single day and 200 yuan for a two-day pass.
