Kids' kite day
HANGZHOU Children's Park on Hupao Road is hosting the 3rd Kite Festival this weekend.
Every child who joins in the dancing, photography and nursery rhyme contests during the festival will receive gifts.
Kids can also participate in a charity sale of kites, with all proceeds donated to a "free lunch program" for children in mountainous areas.
Cooking up a treat
THE Hangzhou Cuisine Museum plans to open its kitchen for the public to learn cooking techniques on the 10th of each month. Interested residents can apply for a place through the local community.
Hangzhou is representative of the cuisine in Zhejiang Province - renowned for being light, crisp and elegant. It is characterized by elaborate preparation and cooking techniques such as sauteing, stewing, stir-frying and deep-frying.
Covering an area of 12,470 square meters, the museum specializes in presenting the culture of Hangzhou cuisine, including its history, features and techniques. It also features a restaurant offering authentic Hangzhou dishes.
Metro police train
Hangzhou Public Security Bureau has said that 57 police officers will be assigned to Hangzhou Metro Line 1 when it opens in October. New recruits have been training for the past six months and next month will be assigned to police stations on the Beijing and Shanghai Metro networks for on-site training.
Drawing crowds
A cartoon professionals' conference for the 8th China International Comics & Animation Festival will be held on May 2 in Jianguo Hotel, Binjiang District.
Ten outstanding animation enterprises will be revealing recruitment plans, with positions offering salaries in excess of 100,000 yuan (US$15,851). In order to cultivate animation talent, prestigious universities are cooperating with animation companies to conduct training programs and accreditation examinations.
In addition, 6,000 "talent coupons" - which can be used as admission in designated training institutions and examinations - will be distributed. Anyone over the age of 16 attending can receive one voucher worth 300 yuan.
Housing boom
LAST month, 2,009 units of pre-owned housing were sold in the main urban areas of Hangzhou. This was the largest sales volume in the past year - up 59 percent from a month earlier.
This month, although affected by the holiday early in the month, daily trading volume has already reached 60 to 70 units.
It's not hard to imagine that this situation will continue, said experts.
Xing Haiyan, a brand management director of Zhongyuan Real Estate, said that "The biggest push is banks loosening loan policies."
Another factor in the upsurge in sales is that the price of housing has continued to fall.
The attitude of landlords has also been a factor, as there is more bargaining room for buyers if the landlord eager to sell, said experts.
Accidents down
DURING the first quarter in Hangzhou, 572 workplace accidents occurred in which 145 people died - figures 13 percent and 24 percent lower, respectively, than for the same period in 2011.
To further reduce numbers, a rigorous inspection system will be applied in high-risk industries, such as hazardous chemicals and mining, said officials.
In another initiative, a credit evaluation system will be established. Any company found to be engaged in illegal production or responsible for accidents will be placed on a blacklist.
Tooth grew in nose
A Hangzhou woman was found to have a tooth growing in her nose, Metropolitan Express reported earlier this week.
The woman, surnamed Li, 31, had gone to the Stomatology Hospital of Zhejiang University Medical School last week, where a CT scan showed a tooth poking through her nasal cavity.
Doctors removed the 2cm long and 0.5cm wide tooth.
Such additional teeth are sometimes found in children with hereditary disorder. Li's case is very rare, considering her age and the position of the tooth, said a doctor, surnamed Pan.
"If such teeth are not removed in good time they will affect the dental range and position of normal teeth," Pan said.
