Laba lovers line up

Citizen influence
Hangzhou residents will have the opportunity to get involved in policy making and urban management even if they are not a member of the People's Congress or Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, as Hangzhou is going to select about 20,000 "citizen representatives" to offer help and make suggestions to the government.
Anyone who has lived in Hangzhou for at least one year can apply for the position, including college students and migrant workers. They can sign up on www.hangzhou.com.cn, and candidates will be selected according to the their involvement and the quality of their suggestions. The candidate list shall be eventually approved by the Citizen Representatives Office.
According to local government, citizen representatives will have opportunities to sit in on some government conferences and important hearings, giving opinions and advice to influence policies.
Eco-friendly buses
One hundred environmentally friendly buses which burn natural gas will be put into use next Thursday, as each bus can save about 30,000 yuan (US$4,548) in annual energy costs.
According to the Xiaoshan Bus Company, the carbon dioxide emissions from this kind of bus are 20 percent lower than regular buses, and the emission of carbon monoxide is 90 percent lower. In the future, five gas stations will be placed all over the city to fuel these buses.
Attractive city
Hangzhou has ranked fourth in the selection of "The Most Attractive Chinese Cities for Foreign Professionals," just after Beijing, Shanghai and Dalian, Liaoning Province.
The selection took place from June to November last year, and more than 179,000 foreign professionals voted from 353 Chinese mainland cities. The judging panel was made up of 40 expat experts who have made outstanding contributions to China.
Volunteer art
The Hangzhou Committee of the Communist Youth League and Hangzhou Volunteer Association are now collecting comic images of Hangzhou volunteers by the public, and the best works will be used in volunteer activities and advertisements.
The collection will end on February 20 and applicants can download the application form and get further details at http://news.xizi-youth.net.
Exit-Entry center
The Exit-Entry Administration Center of Xihu District Public Security Bureau will be moved to the fourth floor of Xihu District Administrative Service Center on Monday.
The exit-entry center serves more than 80,000 visits annually, ranking top among all the Hangzhou districts. The service center is on 228 Jingzhou Road.
Student increase
The number of foreign students studying in colleges and universities in Zhejiang Province has been growing in recent years.
According to the Education Department of Zhejiang Province, there have been 10,517 foreign students studying in Zhejiang colleges and universities, which is also the first time that the number has exceeded 10,000.
In the past 10 years, the number of foreign students has increased by 13 times the amount in 1999. Now, 10,517 foreign students from 107 countries and regions are studying in 33 universities, while in 1999 there were only 735 students from 49 countries and regions studying in 11 universities.
Yuhang donations
More than 17.8 million yuan (US$2.7 million) was raised last Friday for charity by 63 companies in the city's Yuhang District.
Six companies donated more than 1 million yuan each, while government workers in the district also donated 40,000 yuan to help disadvantaged people.
Yuhang District raised more than 33 million yuan last year and helped about 39,200 needy residents in the district with 26.7 million yuan of allowances.
