Lacquerware find

A folding lacquerware screen featuring "Ten Views of West Lake" has been found in a national museum in Havana, Cuba.

The artwork was discovered in the National Museum of Decoration Arts.

The back of the screen dates the piece to 1689 and identifies it as being a 50th birthday gift for the mother of a man surnamed Li.

It was crafted during the reign of Emperor Kangxi (1654-1722). The screen depicts the names and views of 10 classical views of West Lake. Six of the names, including Lotus in the Breeze at Crooked Courtyard and Autumn Moon over the Calm Lake are still used today.

The advisor said the other four names are slightly different from today's usage. This was probably to avoid any unlucky wording on a gift for an auspicious occasion.

The screen is in perfect condition.

"Ten Views of West Lake" became famous during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Emperor Kangxi wrote the names of the 10 views and had them carved on stones when he visited Hangzhou in 1699.
