Learning Cities meeting

THE UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) held its first member meeting in Hangzhou last week and issued its “Hangzhou Declaration.”

Over 100 representatives from member cities in Germany, UK, South Korea and Brazil attended the meeting and discussed issues like using Internet technology in city development, allocating learning resources to different communities, and formulating a legal framework for building learning cities.

Hangzhou joined the network in January. Hangzhou Mayor Zhang Hongming was elected chairman of the member meeting.

The GNLC is an international policy-oriented network to provide inspiration, know-how and best practices to member cities. Learning cities at all stages of development can benefit greatly from sharing ideas with other cities, as solutions to problems arising from urban development may already exist elsewhere.

The Hangzhou meeting also included a preparatory session for the 3rd International Conference on Learning Cities to take place in Cork, Ireland, next year.
