Let Expedia take you for a Hangzhou journey

THE Hangzhou Tourism Commission has teamed up with Expedia, the world’s leading online travel agency, to promote summer trips to Hangzhou. They have also launched virtual tours of Silk Road countries on Twitter.

Expedia users can learn about the sights, activities, food and hotels in Hangzhou and earn 1 kilometer of mileage if they tweet the message to a friend. Anyone who has earned 5,500 kilometers will win a free trip to Hangzhou.

The event was launched by Expedia on March 1. The Hangzhou Tourism Commission hopes to attract more European travelers.

Last year, Hangzhou received 63,951 French visitors, 12 percent more than in 2015 — the fastest growth among European countries. UK visitors increased 10.7 percent to 69,216, while Germans rose 8.3 percent year on year to 80,463.

Hangzhou has direct flights to Amsterdam and Paris and will launch flights to new destinations in Europe this year.

The commission also cooperated with American television network ABC to hold a “Hangzhou in Hollywood” event in Los Angeles last month.

It showed Chinese tea ceremony, silk fashion and Chinese folk arts. Participants had a chance to win a trip to Hangzhou.

The US is Hangzhou’s third largest overseas market. Last year, 243,000 Americans visited, up 8.3 percent from 2015. The city also opened direct flights to LA and San Francisco last year.

The New York Times picked Hangzhou as one of the 52 “Amazing Places to Go” in 2016. Lonely Planet recommended Hangzhou as one of the seven best travel destinations for the New Year holiday.
