Liangzhu relics

ARCHAEOLOGISTS last week removed a layer of mud with cattle footprints reckoned to be about 5,000 years old in wooden boxes in an effort to restore the artifacts from the prehistoric life of the Liangzhu Culture that existed in the Yangtze River Delta region, mostly in today's Zhejiang Province.

They also unearthed a primitive canoe from the same era at the site. The canoe is 7.35 meters long and 45 centimeters at the widest point.

The rare finds will be displayed in a museum at the Maoshan Heritage Site near Hangzhou after three years of dehydration and desalination treatment to ensure their preservation.

Archaeological excavation at the 100,000-square-meter Maoshan Heritage Site began in July 2009.

Liangzhu is a Neolithic culture famous for its jade carvings. Liangzhu Museum opened in October 2008 exhibiting artifacts that offer a glimpse of the life of the Liangzhu people who lived 5,000 years ago.
