Hangzhou's first French library opened last Saturday at the Alliance Fran?锟燼ise of Hangzhou in Zhejiang Gongshang University.

Thierry Mathou, consul-general of France in Shanghai and his wife, and Rudy Salles, vice mayor of Nice, France presented the opening ceremony.

As the only French library in the city and even Zhejiang Province, it features 600 collections. In three years, the number will reach 2,000, and collections will include French books, DVDs and CDs, as well as books about France written in Chinese.

Covering around 100 square meters, the library sharing the grounds of Alliance Fran?锟燼ise of Hangzhou features traditional Chinese and Western design. The comfortable reading corner cost 1 million yuan (US$150,443), allocated by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The library is free to its students and charges an annual fare of 200 yuan to others.

The Alliance Fran?锟燼ise founded in 1883 is a highly prestigious organization that aims to promote French language and culture throughout the world by organizing French cultural events and giving French language courses.

Hangzhou's Alliance Fran?锟燼ise opened in 2008, and it now boasts over 1,000 students and has organized nearly 70 cultural events, such as exhibitions, concerts and conferences.
