Loads of new venues and attractions
AS Hangzhou gains a deeper understanding of the leisure concept, there are an increasing number of ways for people to enjoy their recreation time. That is why the 2011 World Leisure Expo has expanded considerably from the 2006 event.
Qiandao Lake
Sports will be the highlight of the Qiandao Lake Zone in Chun'an County during the 2011 World Leisure Expo.
The lake is one of the national training centers for water sports.
During the expo, a yacht exhibition will be held at the lake from September 23 to 25. The event will allow visitors to take a ride on the yachts made by manufacturers from around the world.
Also, some 20 giant hot air balloons will appear in the sky for the opening ceremony. Visitors can take a ride in one of the hot air balloons on September 20 and 21. The ride will take a route across the lake, which guarantees some great views and lots of photo ops.
People can now cycle around the lake for the first time as the road circling it has been completed this year. To celebrate the accomplishment, a cycling race will be held on October 16 with more than 400 participants from around the world. Bike rentals are also available near the lake for visitors.
Xiang Lake
The Xiang Lake Zone in Xiaoshan District was the only zone hosting events for the 2006 World Leisure Expo. While some old highlights like World Leisure Expo Park and Leisure Industry Exhibition Hall have been kept, the scenic zone along with its beautiful lake, forests and mountains has much more to offer than just a bunch of exhibitions.
"It took three years to renovate the scenic area," said Fang Yi, deputy director of Xiaoshan District. "The whole area is now an ideal place for a getaway."
Though not as well known as the West Lake, Xiang Lake is just as tranquil and beautiful. A stage has been built right on the lake and more than 40 troupes from across the world will perform during the expo.
With the blessing of nature combined with technology, Xiang Lake is also home to the biggest fountain in east China. The fountain, with its highest water column able to reach 100 meters, can also be used as a water curtain to screen movies. With fantastic lighting, the fountain performance will offer visitors a magical sight during the expo.
Baima (White Horse) Lake
Originally a rarely visited wetland, the Baima Lake area is now better known as it was designated a national creative industry park in 2008. Since then, the whole area has been transformed into a creative wonderland.
As a major exhibition spot, the Thematic Exhibition Hall is located in the Baima Lake Convention and Exhibition Center. The center is home to a series of stunning buildings with a wavy design. As home to lots of creative firms, the center was designated as a permanent exhibition center for the annual China International Animation & Cartoon Festival in 2010.
Yet these changes have not ruined the idyllic atmosphere of the ecological paradise. The fishing villages around the lake remain although some professionals now live among the locals, blurring the once clear boundary of city and countryside.
