Local expo ends

THE 12th West Lake International Expo wrapped up last Saturday in Hangzhou, attracting more than 13 million visitors and trade deals worth 16.2 billion yuan (US$2.44 billion).

The theme of this year's fair was "Innovative Expo, Harmonious City and Quality Life." A total of 35 exhibitions, 30 conference meetings and 60 festive events were held over three weeks.

Highlighted activities included the International Sister-City Mayors' Summit, the International Electronics Show and the International Baby Products Fair.

The expo opened with a fireworks display and featured an international music festival, a silk festival, a clown carnival, an international marathon race and a world-class car drifting competition.

The West Lake Expo has served as a platform to promote Hangzhou. Its debut show in 1929 lasted 128 days and was so popular that it enjoyed the same fame as the Chicago Expo in 1893, the Paris Expo in 1900 and the Philadelphia Expo in 1926. It did not happen again until 2000 when the city decided to hold the fair on an annual basis.

Over the years, it has contributed to Hangzhou's development as a modern industrial and service center and a green, tourist city.

The West Lake Expo also promotes the city's convention and exhibition industry. Last year it attracted more than 12.9 million visitors with 124 conferences, exhibitions and other events and generated 13.8 billion yuan in trade revenue.

Decline in donors

The number of blood donors in Hangzhou dropped by nearly 30 percent in the first nine months of this year.

However, the city's blood reserve is still at a safe level thanks to a new practice of collecting blood on the street and the creation of an emergency system at the same time, according to Wang Jianxun, deputy director of the Hangzhou Blood Donation Administrative Center.

Medical staff and public servants in Hangzhou are the main source of blood for the emergency system. Last year, more than 4,600 medical staff in the city gave blood, accounting for 2.37 percent of total donors.

"Next, we are going to set up a donor database to prevent acute blood shortages in the city," Wang said.

The cities of Beijing, Kunming in Yunnan Province and Changchun in Jilin Province, and the provinces of Shandong, Shanxi and Jiangxi have recently reported blood shortages.

'Wenhui' winners

Creation of Khmer Braille and a Khmer sign language in Cambodia and Beijing Foreign Studies University's English-language volunteer program Xin Yu were winners of "Wenhui" awards for education innovation in Hangzhou.

The Cambodian inventions were awarded for enabling thousands of handicapped Cambodians to integrate into local and global communities.

The volunteer program was awarded for sending volunteer teachers to remote Chinese villages, compiling textbooks, training local teachers and setting up communication for children.

The "Wenhui" awards were initialed by UNESCO's Office of Asia Pacific in Bangkok and China's National Commission for UNESCO. The awards were financed by Hangzhou's Xiacheng District and were distributed with other honors at an international conference on education innovations in Hangzhou.

New bridge coming

Hangzhou residents will have one more option to drive across the Qiantang River once the Jiubao Bridge, the eighth span over the river, is completed next year. Construction workers joined the two halves of the bridge's main span yesterday morning.

Five kilometers downstream from Pengbu Bridge and 8 kilometers upstream from Xiasha Bridge, the new bridge will be 1,855 meters long and have six lanes. Vehicle speed will be limited to 80kph.

Jiubao Bridge is seen as a vital link in a new highway now under construction in eastern Hangzhou. The 36-kilometer highway will connect Lingping Town with the Southern-Ring Road of Hangzhou. According to the city's urban planning, there will be 10 bridges and two tunnels across the Qiantang River. Jiubao Bridge is the eighth bridge in the scheme and two more bridges, Zhijiang Bridge and Qianjiang New Rail Bridge, are already under construction.

Bike brand revived

Forever, one of China's best known bicycle brands, is enjoying brisk sales through its online store on Taobao.com. More than 1,000 Forever C bikes were sold recently.

Forever C has a bold and chic design in bright colors. It is designed by a team of Hangzhou designers in their 20s. The new model was put on the market in April but sales picked up after its Taobao flagship store opened in September.

"This bicycle is produced in Shanghai but designed in Hangzhou," said Zhang Wei, head of the design team.

They plan to revitalize the brand by introducing more tailor-made, special-purpose bikes through cooperation with artists.
