Lots going under the hammer

Xiling Yinshe Auction Company is to launch its 2012 spring auction this weekend in Hangzhou, with some 3,000 lots, including more than 500 pieces on offer to the public for the first time.

One of leading auction houses in the country, Xiling Yinshe, which is based in Hangzhou, has everything from paintings and calligraphy to sculptures and seals.

A presale exhibition will be held tomorrow and Friday at Zhejiang World Trade Center, free to the public. The auction takes place at Zhejiang Narada Grand Hotel from Saturday until next Tuesday.

One highlight is a series of manuscripts by the former Chinese Nationalist government leader Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) of the announcement of the relationship rupture between Taiwan and Japan, written in 1972.

Collected by relatives of Huang Shaogu, Chiang's foreign minister, the manuscripts are on sale for the first time, with an estimated value of between 1.5 million yuan and 1.8 million yuan (US$235,500-US$282,600).

The auction features the company's first sale of "Bricks of the Imperial Palace in the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing Dynasty (1644-1911)." Although black, these are called jinzhuan in Chinese, literally meaning "gold bricks" because they have commanded a similar price to gold through history, due to the fine craftsmanship.

This auction boasts more than 90 bricks from the Imperial Palace, mostly featuring the year of production, the size and the name of sender or recipient inscribed.

Another first is "Coins from Different Dynasties," which includes a complete collection of the first set of yuan from the People's Republic of China, as well as shovel-shaped coins and gold ingots dating back to Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BC).

Traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy is a specialty of Xiling. Last year, a painting of renowned master Ren Bonian was sold for 167 million yuan, a record for Shanghai school paintings.

The auction has listed paintings from well-known traditional masters, such as Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong and Huang Binhong. A Zhu Da's signature painting "Lotus and Bird," with a reserve price of 6 million yuan, is expected to go for 10 million yuan.
