Make a date for New Year performances

A new year is coming and it's the season of concerts, opera and drama. Hangzhou residents used to meet with family and friends to welcome the new year, but in recent years, more and more locals prefer taking friends to theaters and stadiums to enjoy some high-end performances.

At the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013, Hangzhou has several concerts and dramas with the big names like pianist Richard Clayderman, City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and The Mantovani Orchestra.

Shanghai Daily picks four performances, where music lovers can say farewell to 2012 and welcome 2013 on a cultural note. Concert by the Mantovani Orchestra

The orchestra is named after its founder, Annunzio Paolo Mantovani (1905-1980). Born in Venice, Mantovani was a conductor and entertainer who created his own signature "Mantovani sound."

In 1933, he established the Mantovani Orchestra in the United Kingdom, which was considered the birth of light orchestra music. The orchestra found fame rearranging masterpieces by Beethoven, Mozart and other composers.

From 1935 to 1936, Mantovani soared in popularity in the United States, by virtue of his works of "Red Sails in the Sunset" and "Serenade to the Night."

Recordings by the Mantovani Orchestra were also regularly used for demonstration purposes in stores selling hi-fi equipment.

The Hangzhou show will include performances of "And I Love You So," "Smoke Gets in You Eyes," "Elizabethan Serenade," "Londonderry Air" and "The Yellow Rose Of Texas," among others.
