Man gets flat

A 33-YEAR-OLD man from Shandong Province succeeded in getting a public rental apartment in Hangzhou last week. He was among the first group of 55 migrants to rent low-renting public apartments in the city.

The man surnamed Liu came to Hangzhou in 2006 to start his own business after graduating from college. But housing was a big problem for him, especially after he recently became a father. His family shared a three-bedroom apartment with two other tenants to save money.

Liu said they shared the same bathroom and kitchen, making life inconvenient for everyone. The crying of his baby forced one tenant to move and Liu had to cover the extra rent.

After hearing that the Hangzhou government began to accept applications for public rental apartments in July, Liu submitted an application and obtained an apartment through lottery. His new home is 60 square meters, well furnished and ready for move-in.

Liu said the monthly rent costs 16 yuan (US$9.79) per square meter, including property management fee. Parking costs 200 yuan a month. Tenants of public rental apartments enjoy the same public services as locals and their children can go to nearby schools.

Thirty-three housing developments in Hangzhou offer more than 7,000 public rental apartments.
